GREENER GUESTHOUSES

Responsible tourism is a growing global trend. Essentially it is a tourism management strategy in which the tourism sector and tourists take mutual responsibility to protect and conserve the natural environment, local heritage, cultures and traditions.  It is also about providing better holiday experiences for guests through sustainable business opportunities for tourism enterprises, which in turn contribute to stronger local economies through providing livelihoods and generating revenues for environmental conservation and management.
Current challenges: Being inland from the Cape peninsula and separated from it by the Limietberg, Tulbagh historically receives only limited winter rain followed by a long, dry summer.  The 2015 winter delivered only 30% of normal rainfall and the dam that feeds our town is at a seriously low level.  Punitive water restrictions are currently in place and we urgently need to conserve water.
Recent problems with our national energy grid have also taught us that equally we need to conserve power.  Please work with your host to achieve these objectives.
Some ways in which visitors can help us follow:
  • Linen and towels should be replaced only on request - not every day - in order to minimize unnecessary washing.
  • Please do not deposit any foreign objects in toilets – often on farms these operate on a French drain system.  Also be aware of how often you flush and use the differential settings if provided.
  • Use a shower rather than a bath and limit the length of it.  Consider only wetting yourself and turning the water off while you lather and then rinsing afterward.
  • Do not leave the basin tap running while you brush your teeth.
  • Do not dive into nor splash water out of pools.
  • Utilize the bins provided – your host will recycle your waste insofar as is possible.
  • Ask your host if a grey water system is in place and, if not, ask for a bucket to catch water while waiting for taps to run warm.
  • Cars may only be washed with buckets, not hosepipes.
  • Limit your use of electrical appliances and ensure that all such are switched off when you leave your accommodation.
Thank you for your kind co-operation!

It's Finally Happening
You have all be waiting to hear the details of when and where the train will be running. We are very proud and excited to be able to share these details with you now.

What the trip will entail
Departure will be from Demeter Station at Ceres Golf Estate in Ceres.
We will then briefly stop at Waverley Hills while passengers, who wish to do so, disembark. The train will then proceed to Wolseley, where it turns around and begins its return to Ceres. There will be a quick stop at Waverley Hills to collect the passengers who had previously disembarked. The train will then arrive back at Demeter for all passengers to disembark. We expect the journey to take 2 ½ hours.

There will be a cash bar on the train. We do not allow you to bring your own food or beverages on the train, but you can pre-order your meal hamper to have at Waverley Hills, which is explained in more detail below. There are ablution facilities on the train. Please note that the train cannot accommodate wheelchairs or prams at this time.

What’s happening at Waverley Hills?
You can pre-order a Meal Hamper, which includes a wine tasting, when you make your booking, which will be ready and waiting for you when we stop there.
You can then enjoy your meal in the lovely Olive Grove at the venue until the train arrives back to collect you. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate any last minute orders for these hampers.
This is what you can expect to find in your meal hamper.
